Why this quietly captivating region is one of Italy’s most meaningful journeys
One of our advisors, Amy Cochran, just returned from Puglia. A region in southern Italy, forming the “heel” of Italy’s boot along the Adriatic Sea. But beyond geography, Puglia is a feeling and a style of travel that is quite different from the Italy most people first imagine.
A Quick Snapshot
Details
Location: Southeast Italy
Coastline: Over 500 miles along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas
Capital: Bari
Known for: Masserie (historic farm estates), olive groves, whitewashed towns, incredible food
The Travel Style
Puglia is best experienced slowly. It is not about rushing between sights. It is about:
- Long lunches that turn into afternoons
- Evenings around the table with local wine
- Staying in one place and exploring from there
- Feeling connected to the land and culture
Who It’s Perfect For
- Travelers who have already been to Italy and want to go deeper
- Those seeking something more relaxed and authentic
- Food and wine lovers
- Couples and families who appreciate space, privacy, and beautiful surroundings
The Italy That Reveals Itself Slowly
Puglia is not love at first sight in the way Positano or Lake Como can be. Instead, it reveals itself more — quieter, more grounded, and a little more raw and real. And that is exactly what makes it so compelling.
After spending time here on a recent itinerary through the region and into Matera, what stood out most was not just the beauty, but the feeling. Here, luxury is not about being seen; rather, it is about slowing down, connecting, and experiencing Italy in a more authentic, layered way.
My experience began in a private masseria villa, surrounded by olive groves and open countryside, which in turn set the tone for the entire trip—relaxed, unhurried, and deeply personal.
Alberobello & the Valle d’Itria: Storybook Italy
There are moments in Puglia that feel almost surreal.
Our first day, walking through Alberobello, with its iconic trulli, feels like stepping into a storybook. But beyond the beauty, what makes this region special is how experiential it is.
You do not just see Puglia. You taste it.
A burrata-making experience at a local dairy was one of those defining moments. Watching the craftsmanship, then sitting down to taste it just minutes later, is the kind of experience that stays with you long after you leave. Everything we had from cheeses to meats, was produced on site.
Masserie: The Soul of Puglia
If there is one word that defines Puglia, it is masseria.
These historic farm estates have been transformed into some of Italy’s most soulful luxury stays. But they have not lost their roots.
At one masseria, we walked through ancient olive groves, tasting oils from trees that have stood for centuries. At another, dinner was served family-style, with ingredients grown just steps away.
These accommodations vary in luxury and will depend on client styles, budget, traveling companions (families, couples) but all are thoughtful, rooted, and deeply connected to place.
How We Design Puglia for Clients
This is not a region to “do” quickly.
The magic comes from:
Choosing the right home base — often a villa or masseria — is key. From there, it’s about thoughtfully layering in experiences without over-scheduling, while also balancing time between the countryside, coast, and culture. Just as important is knowing which properties truly deliver on both luxury and service.
This is where careful planning makes all the difference. For that reason, we suggest 8–10 nights, along with a split stay in at least two different areas, so you can fully immerse yourself in the experience.
Lecce & Ostuni: Baroque Beauty Meets Coastal Light
Lecce brings a different energy.
The Adriatic: Wild, Dramatic, and Unexpected
Polignano a Mare, with its dramatic cliffs and turquoise water, offers a completely different side of Italy. Here, a private catamaran along the coast reveals hidden caves, quiet coves, and that unmistakable Mediterranean light.
It is less polished than the Amalfi Coast, and in many ways, even more special because of it.
Matera: A Place Like Nowhere Else
Just beyond Puglia, Matera feels like stepping into another world.
Here, ancient cave dwellings carved into stone, winding pathways, and a history that stretches back thousands of years create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. A newer hotel, Vetera Matera, is set within historic limestone caves and features a gorgeous underground spa. As a member of Relais & Châteaux, the food is exceptional.
Matera is, in many ways, one of the most atmospheric places in Italy, and when paired with Puglia, it creates a journey that feels both grounded and extraordinary.
In a world where travel often moves too quickly, Puglia offers something different.
Time, space, and a deeper connection to place.
And that, in itself, is a luxury. And when you are ready to experience this side of Italy, we would love to design it with you.
