Overtourism

The headlines are impossible to ignore: protests in Barcelona, limits on tour groups in Venice, and concerns from Amsterdam to Athens about the rising tide of tourists each summer. Overtourism is not a new conversation, but it's one that's gaining urgency.

At We Travel Luxe, we recognize that the way we explore the world matters. As Europe faces the growing impact of tourism on its cities, coastlines, and communities, our responsibility as travelers and advisors is clear: we must be thoughtful, intentional, and informed.

Luxury travel has always been about more than five-star hotels. It’s about deep connection, exclusive access, and unforgettable moments—and increasingly, it’s about sustainability, cultural respect, and traveling in a way that feels good, not just looks good.

Here are the guiding principles we aim to follow to ensure our clients enjoy Europe beautifully and responsibly:

Timing is Everything

We encourage off-peak travel wherever possible. Spring and fall bring quieter streets, better rates, and a more relaxed pace—not to mention stunning seasonal charm. A September visit to the Amalfi Coast or an April trip to Provence often feels far more luxurious than braving the crowds in July.

However, we work with so many families who must travel in the summer. How do we try to navigate this? Read on...

Stay Local, Support Local

We prioritize properties that are locally owned or community-integrated. We try to craft itineraries with a sense of place. Our travelers enjoy vineyard lunches with small producers, private walking tours with local historians, and market visits guided by local chefs. These moments aren't just more authentic—they directly benefit the people who make a place truly special.

This is why we partner with our trusted local in-country suppliers as much as possible. They have "boots on the ground" and a vested interest in making your trip amazing while showcasing their country with care.

Go Beyond the Bucket List

Yes, Santorini and Paris are magical. But so are Paros, the Basque Coast, and the inland villages of Tuscany.

We try to design itineraries that balance the iconic with the undiscovered—giving travelers the joy of discovery and destinations room to breathe.

So if you are traveling during high season, be open to suggestions to see a spot you may not have heard of... yet. It may become your favorite place.

 Slow Down

It is always our first choice to build in time to linger. Fewer hotel changes, longer stays, and unhurried mornings transform a vacation from a checklist to a life experience. We do understand that families are trying to see as much as possible. Rome wasn't built in a day and it is very hard to "see everything" in one swoop.

Our clients often tell us their favorite memories weren’t scheduled at all—they happened while wandering side streets, enjoying a long lunch, or finding an unexpected view.

Be a Guest, Not a Consumer

We gently educate our clients to travel with awareness. Learn a few words of the local language. Be respectful in sacred spaces. Choose restaurants and shops that reflect the local economy. Ask questions. Listen. It all adds up to a more enriching experience—and a warmer welcome.

The Future of Travel is Thoughtful

As more destinations take steps to protect their cultural and environmental integrity, we see a beautiful opportunity. To return to what made travel magical in the first place: wonder, connection, and curiosity.

If you’re dreaming of a European journey that feels as good as it looks—let’s talk. We'll craft something intentional, immersive, and truly unforgettable.
